Watercare and its consultants struck gold twice at the recent 2011 Association of Chartered Engineers New Zealand (ACENZ) awards.
A total of just eight gold awards were handed out this year. Watercare’s double was especially good news considering it was only involved in three entries in total.
Project Hobson was the first gold winner. The project involved replacement of the ageing sewer pipe that crossed Hobson Bay with a three-kilometre-long tunnel that connects to a new pump station in the Orakei Domain.
The new tunnel and pump station provide for population growth in the area and will also increase recreational opportunities in the bay.
The North Shore’s Rosedale wastewater treatment plant outfall tunnel project was another gold winner on the night. The 3km long segmented line tunnel travels from the Rosedale Wastewater Treatment Plant to Mairangi Bay. The tunnel then connects to a new 2.5km marine outfall pipe to allow treated water to be discharged 2.7km off shore, compared to just 600m for the previous outfall pipe.
Chief executive Mark Ford says: “These awards are superb recognition for the hard work put into these projects over a considerable amount of time. I’d like to personally congratulate all those involved in both projects.”
These awards follow Watercare’s success at the INGENIUM awards earlier in the year where, for the second year running, it won the Projects of Investigation, Reporting, Systems or Process category.
