Engineering Standards

All extensions to Watercare’s water and wastewater networks must be designed and constructed in accordance with Watercare’s engineering standards.

The Water and Wastewater Code of Practice for Land Development and Subdivision applies region-wide. It is based on Standards New Zealand’s NZS 4404: 2010 and initially covers chapters five (wastewater) and six (water) of NZS 4404: 2010.  In time, Watercare’s code of practice will be complemented by other chapters developed by the Auckland Council and Auckland Transport to cover their activities, in particular, stormwater and roads.

The Water and Wastewater Code of Practice for Land Development and Subdivision

  1. Introduction

  2. General requirements and procedures

  3. Network utility services

  4. Wastewater

  5. Water supply

  6. Appendix A: Acceptable pipe and fitting materials

  7. Appendix B: Standard construction drawings: currently these drawings are the same as those used by the previous local network operators with only the title blocks amended. In some cases, the content of the drawings will refer to redundant local standards. Please seek guidance from Watercare if you see a discrepancy. These drawings will be updated in time.

  8. Appendix C: Field testing of pipelines

  9. Appendix D: Water supply disinfection specifications

  10. Appendix E: Not used in this code of practice

  11. Appendix F: Schedules and forms

Legacy engineering standards, user-guides and drawings

Developments and construction that commenced prior to 1 July 2011 will continue to utilise the standards used by the previous local network operators.  If required, these local standards and drawings can be accessed below.
