How to Read a Water Meter

Reading your water meter can be useful if you think there may be a leak somewhere on your property.  You may also like to read your meter to see how much water you use during a day or week, or to confirm that the latest meter reading on your bill is accurate.

Locating your water meter

Your water meter is usually just inside your front boundary, in a timber, plastic, concrete, or metal box. Lift the lid and you should see the meter dial. You may need to remove leaves and debris, or flip up the protective cover, to read the register.

If you do not know which water meter serves your property, you can check using our step-by-step guide.

Most water meters are a digital metric type.

This meter reads 3,746,258.9 litres or 3746.258m3. Read the first three red numbers only. Note: All metric water meters show cubic metres (m3) in black on white and parts of cubic metres in red.
