Rain Forest Express FAQs

Does the train run every day?

We run public trips every weekend and weekdays during the school/public holidays. The train can also be chartered privately any day of the week.

Can we purchase food/beverages there?

There are no facilities at the depot or picnic area to purchase food/beverages, however you are welcome to bring along a picnic with you.

What facilities are available at the picnic area?

There are picnic tables and seating (all undercover) and a gas BBQ.

Are the BBQ facilities available to use on every trip?

No - we only fire up the BBQ on Twilight trips and for private charters (on request).

Can I book tickets online?

No, not at this stage - you can call the reservation centre on (09) 302 8028 or email rainforest@water.co.nz and request a booking for your specified trip. 

What payment methods are accepted?

You can pay by Visa and MasterCard at the time of booking. You can also pay by Visa, MasterCard, or Eftpos at Jacobsons Depot before departing on your trip.  

Do you have a set schedule of trips?

No we do not as we also charter out our train privately. We have a schedule of available trips on our website which is updated regularly.

Does the train run when it rains?

The train runs rain or shine - we have umbrellas available for passengers to use.

Is the train safe for under five year olds?

Yes it is - with adult supervision.

Can I take pushchair on to the train?

Yes - they can be folded down and put into the baggage carriage.

Can wheelchairs go on to the train?

The passenger can be lifted out of the wheelchair into their seat on the train and the wheelchair will need to be collapsed and put into the baggage carriage for the duration of the trip.

Do you have family passes available?

Any group with two or more paying children (5-12 year olds) is entitled to a 10 per cent discount on the total fare.

Is there secure parking for vehicles?

 Yes - your vehicle will be locked into the compound for the duration of the journey.

Can we turn up and purchase tickets at the depot on the day of the trip?

No. You need to book in advance.

Can we book tickets at Jacobsen's Depot? 

No - you need to call the bookings office on (09) 302 8028 or email rainforest@water.co.nz to make a booking request.

Is there a commentary on the train?

Yes, our driver will point out highlights and inform you about the history of the area and the train throughout your journey.
