Watercare offers schools in Auckland a free, student-centred science programme called Adopt A Stream.
Targeted at years 5-8, Adopt A Stream contains resources for a hands-on field study of a local waterway and lab analysis work. It also provides supporting information on the water cycle and the fundamental relationship between water and all living things. The programme is approved as being compatible with levels 3 and 4 of the New Zealand Science Curriculum with links to maths, English, social studies, and technology curricula.
Adopt A Stream fosters interest in and awareness of water related environmental issues, bringing science to life and showing students how water quality and ecology directly affect their lives. Adopt A Stream’s hands-on approach instills students with self-confidence in their scientific skills and abilities.
Adopt a local stream and enjoy watching your students get involved with learning about their environment as they also learn some great scientific processes. If your school doesn’t have a stream nearby, Watercare can help with a combined Adopt A Stream and Rain Forest Express field trip. Find out more here.
“It is a wonderful programme and the kids learn so much as well as having all the fun!” – Wikus Swanepoel, Albany Junior High School
