Watercare is planning to construct a new watermain to cater for population growth and to increase the security of the water supply.
The Hunua No. 4 Trunk Watermain (Hunua 4) will run for 30 kilometres from Redoubt North Reservoir in Manukau to Market Road in Epsom, connecting to the local water supply network along the way.
What is happening now?
Watercare has lodged Notices of Requirement with Auckland City Council and Manukau City Council, along with a package of Resource Consents with the Auckland Regional Council.
Once the councils have considered these applications they will be publicly notified. This provides opportunity to make submissions on the proposed works and is expected to happen in May 2010.
While most of the construction work will take place between 2012 and 2016, work on the section that crosses the Manukau Harbour is being carried out now as part of the New Zealand Transport Agency’s Manukau Harbour Crossing (MHX) Project.
This involves installing a 700-metre-long section of pipeline under the the new bridge deck as well as laying sections of pipeline in Crawford Avenue and Onehunga Mall cul de sac.
The MHX Team will contact you directly if your property is along this route and you are likely to be directly affected by the works. For more information on the current construction work visit: www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/mhc

How will it be constructed?
Hunua 4 will be 1.3 to 1.9 metres in diameter. It will mostly be laid under the road though at times it will cross coastal streams, private property and rural land. Watercare is liaising with these private property owners.
For the majority of the route, open trenching methods will be used to lay the watermain. In sensitive areas – such as busy intersections and coastal areas – more specialised construction methods will be used, eg.tunnelling or pipe bridges.
Traffic around the construction site will be carefully managed to minimise disruption to motorists.
