The Maungawhau Water Supply Upgrade Project will improve the security of the water supply to the suburbs of Mt Eden, Epsom and Greenlane.
The major focus is rebuilding the Mt Eden Reservoir Complex located in Mt Eden (Maungawhau) Reserve. The three reservoirs that make up the complex are between 80 and 100 years old and are approaching the end of their useful lives.
The reservoirs are buried concrete tanks that take up the area of a rugby field and are nearly six metres deep. The new complex is being built within the footprint of the existing reservoirs to minimise the impact on the park. The area above the reservoirs will be landscaped.
The Mt Eden reservoirs are the highest in the Auckland isthmus. This means they can supply high points in the local network by gravity rather than pumps.
The new reservoirs will be able to store 27 million litres of water, enough to meet the local needs for at least 24 hours without being topped up.
Watercare is working closely with a number of stakeholders including Auckland City Parks, Friends of Maungawhau and local iwi to ensure disruption is minimised to the mountain and the public.
Summit access will not be cut off, and walking tracks will also remain open, although slight diversions may occur at times.
