Now that Watercare has met Auckland's needs for adequate water supply with the addition of the Waikato Water Treatment Plant and significantly improved the discharge of treated wastewater to the Manukau Harbour through the upgrade of the Mangere Wastewater Treatment Plant, Auckland's water industry must turn its attention to how water is managed throughout the region.
An Infrastructure Auckland report estimated it could cost between $1.9 bn and $11.2 bn over 20 years to upgrade the water, wastewater and stormwater systems in the region. Auckland's water industry believes the best result for the region's stakeholders, and the environment, can only be achieved by working together, agreeing strategies and treating the water cycle in the region as a whole. This document sets out the Three Waters Vision for the integrated management of water supply, wastewater and stormwater services in the Auckland region. It is a high-level document that outlines the Auckland water industry's collective aspirations to 2050, while ensuring organisations have flexibility to innovate and respond to local requirements.
Preparation of the vision was initiated by the Auckland city, Manukau city, North Shore city, Papakura district, Rodney district and Waitakere city councils in their role as shareholders of Watercare Services Limited. Watercare facilitated preparation of the vision, as a collaborative project with input from a wide range of regional stakeholders from Franklin through to Rodney.
