The result of five years of consultation and a further five of construction, the treatment plant reduces the treatment cycle for wastewater from 21 days to 13 hours and provides bathing water quality discharge into the harbour.
The plant has progressively come on-line without any interruption of daily services. New land-based technology has allowed 500 hectares of oxidation ponds to return to the Manukau harbour and restoration of 13km of shoreline.
The plant was officially opened by prime minister Helen Clark on the 4th of April 2003.
