Hunua Road pump station

The construction of a new boost pump station at 72 Hunua Road, Papakura.
Start–finish: September 2020 – May 2021
Location: 72 Hūnua Road, Papakura
Status: Construction

What is happening?

We are constructing a new boost pump station at 72 Hūnua Road. This will tap into the pipeline which runs from the Waikato Water Treatment plant to Pukekohe East Reservoir.

What are the benefits?

In response to the worst drought on record, we have increasingly looked at the Waikato River and the associated treatment plant to maintain water supplies for Auckland. The boost pump station allows us to prioritise water from the more resilient river feed, giving the water storage dams in the Hūnua and Waitakere ranges more time to recharge and recover.

The Waikato Water Treatment Plant usually provides up to 30 per cent of drinking water for the Auckland region. The Waikato River is a more drought resilient source than our water storage dams due to its large catchment extending all the way to Taupo. This project will enable an additional 50 million litres a day of treatment capacity.

How will the work affect you?

Construction will continue through to May 2021. Traffic mangement will be in place until late January. There will be stop-go signs in both directions on Hūnua Road and Boundary Road. Click to enlarge the map below.
