The land use consent application to carry out earthworks and vegetation removal was submitted to Auckland Council on Monday 5th August 2019. The submission period lasted 20 days, during which Council received 497 submissions. Eight submissions were neutral, 20 were in support of the project and 469 opposed the application.
The hearing of the application (by independent commissioners) took place over a period of four days starting on 24 February 2020. The hearing was adjourned as the commissioners requested we carry out testing of the site for kauri dieback. We engaged Biosense to conduct sampling of the 3.5-hectare site. BioSense took more than 990 samples, the most comprehensive sampling of land for kauri dieback that has ever been undertaken in New Zealand/Aotearoa. The sampling was undertaken from a grid pattern around the individual trees (in standing and running water) along Exhibition Drive, Clarks Bush Track and other locations. The report on the sampling results is available here.
The hearing of the application will reconvene from 14-16 April 2021. The hearing will be held at the Auckland Town Hall rather than Council chambers at the Henderson Service Centre.
