Discover

During the lesson your pupils will discover what the freshwater bugs (macroinvertebrates) that live in our waterways look like. They will find out how they can determine the water quality in the waterway depending on which bugs are found.

Investigate

On the field trip, if the waterway is shallow and easy to access, your pupils will scoop up bugs and empty them into ice-cream containers. If the waterway is not easy to access, adults supervisors will collect the bugs.

The pupils will examine the bugs using magnifying glasses. They will identify the bugs and record them on the bug sheet, with help from the adults.
