Activities that require approval
You need to apply to us if you are planning any of the following works:
New building with indirect connection to public water and/or wastewater network (e.g. sleepout or minor household unit).

Installing an irrigation meter
Demolition works where existing connections need to be capped

Commercial development where:
- Change of use increases water consumption
- The number of users increases
- The area of the building increases

Raising or lowering a manhole (e.g. building a driveway)
- You will need to apply to Auckland Council for engineering approval.
- Before starting work you must meet our health and safety requirements. Go to Accessing our wastewater network.
Raising or lowering a watermain
You will need to apply to Auckland Council for engineering approval.
Activities that do NOT require approval
If your work on a private site does not affect a Watercare asset, you do not need to advise us of the activities listed below.

Residential
- Decks, conservatories
- Outbuildings with no additional sanitary fixtures (e.g. garage, boat shed)
- House extensions/additions with internal access to the existing house
- Internal alterations with no additional sanitary fixtures
- Swimming pools where the water meter size is not more than 20mm
Business
- Compliance schedule amendments
- Racking systems or internal alterations with no additional sanitary fixtures
- Retaining walls, car parks, signage
