East and bays suburbs benefit from our $20m watermain upgrade

03 October 2022

Our $20 million city-wide watermain upgrade project has just been completed in Auckland’s inner eastern suburbs.

The project, which kicked off simultaneously in St Heliers, Mission Bay, Meadowbank and Glendowie back in March, saw us proactively replace more than 12 kilometres of pipeline throughout Auckland.

Our project manager Mark Chijindu says replacing ageing network pipes will minimise leaks and water outages, boosting the network’s resilience.

“We’ve installed new polyethelene pipes in 12 streets in the east and bays area as part of our $20m city-wide watermain renewal programme.

“These new pipes have a design life of about 100 years. Our customers will benefit from fewer leaks that sometimes can cause water outages, which in turn helps us to reduce our operational costs.

To install the pipes we used a horizontal directional drilling method that gets the job done safer, faster and to a higher quality.

Horizontal directional drilling is also better for the environment than open trenching as it lessens the impact on the surrounding residential assets and reduces fractures and soil disturbance.

Chijindu says the support we’ve received from locals has been great.

“Overall, people have been very understanding about out work - and we thank them for their patience.”
