Kelston and New Lynn first to benefit from our $ upgrades

04 August 2022

Kelston and New Lynn are the first suburbs to benefit from our $20 million network watermain renewals project.

The project will see us proactively replace more than 12,000 meters of freshwater pipeline throughout Auckland by the end of the year.

Some of the streets in Kelston that have benefitted from our multi-million-dollar renewals project include Bamboo Grove, Barbery Avenue, Cartwright Road, Daphne Street, Kelkirk Road, Netherlands Ave, Scanlan Terrace, Laura Street Maybelle Place and Kelman Road.

The team is currently finishing up work in Parker Ave and Armstrong Place in New Lynn.

Our project manager Mark Chijindu says replacing ageing network pipes will minimise leaks and water outages - boosting the network’s resilience.

The project reflects our mission to provide our customers with reliable, safe and efficient water and wastewater services – empowering us to better secure our water supply for future generations.

“Customers will also benefit from fewer leaks that sometimes can cause water outages, which in turn reduces our operating costs.”

Chijindu says the new PE Pipes have been installed in 21 streets throughout Auckland’s northwest - and have a design life of around 100 years.

“To install the pipes the team used a drilling method called horizontal directional drilling that allows us to get the job done safer, faster and to a higher quality too.

“Horizontal directional drilling is also better for the environment than open trenching as it lessens the impact on the surrounding residential assets and reduces fractures and soil disturbance.

“The support we have received from the Kelston and New Lynn community has been awesome. They have been very understanding of our work, and we thank them for their patience.”
