Curious crowds explore Beachlands Wastewater Treatment Plant

21 October 2025

On Saturday more than 220 locals took the opportunity to step behind the gates of the Beachlands Wastewater Treatment Plant to explore the facility and learn more about how Watercare safely manages wastewater in their community.

The open day offered guided tours, interactive displays, and a chance to meet the people behind the scenes who help keep the system running smoothly.

Watercare southern wastewater production manager Rohan Bhatia described the open day as “a real hit”, noting the strong turnout and interest from the community.

“We had vans running non-stop, and our tour guides were in their element, sharing the wastewater journey and future plans with groups of 20 to 30 people.

“Feedback was overwhelmingly positive, with people telling us the event was well-organised, insightful, and beyond expectations.

“Many said they’d love to return with their grandchildren and would recommend the experience to friends.”

Visitors also used it as an opportunity to be among the first Aucklanders to experience Watercare’s new Wonder Wai Discovery Centre – a 7-metre-long trailer that uses interactive games and models to bring to life the six stages of Auckland's water journey.

“I’d like to thank everyone who came along and made the day so special,” Bhatia says. “The enthusiasm from the community and our people running the event was incredible.”
