Watercare's Central Interceptor
Southern Operation, Final Breakthrough and System Integration
Follow the final tunnelling push beneath Auckland as Hiwa‑i‑te‑Rangi advances toward Point Erin and the project enters its most complex integration phase.
In early 2025, the southern section was progressively brought into service following careful commissioning and testing. Meanwhile, the TBM completed its journey to Point Erin, marking the final breakthrough and completion of the 16.2-kilometre main tunnel. The TBM was dismantled and removed, and focus shifted to system-wide integration, including testing shafts, connections, and pump station operations.
