Project overview

Watercare is planning to renew approximately 170 metres of ageing wastewater pipeline connected to the Blue Gum Pump Station. The existing rising main has reached the end of its service life and has experienced a number of failures in recent years.

The project sits within a culturally and environmentally sensitive area, close to the Te Weiti / Wade River and Te Herenga Waka o Ōrewa Marae. Because of this, works are being carefully planned and developed in collaboration with mana whenua, Auckland Council, and local stakeholders.

Initial investigative and preparatory works are expected to begin from May 2026. These activities will help confirm ground conditions and finalise the design approach.

The timing of construction will depend on planning and consenting requirements and is anticipated to occur later in 2026, following completion of investigations and design.

Benefits

This project will:

  • improve the reliability of the local wastewater network
  • reduce the risk of wastewater overflows
  • protect the Te Weiti / Wade River environment
  • support long term wastewater services for the Silverdale area

Renewing this pipeline will help ensure wastewater continues to be safely conveyed to treatment facilities for many years to come.

Upcoming works

Planning, design, and site investigations will be undertaken ahead of construction. The map below shows the location of the Blue Gum Pump Station and the section of wastewater pipeline proposed for renewal.

How the work may affect the community

During early investigations and later construction, nearby residents and road users may experience:

  • temporary traffic management
  • construction vehicle movements
  • some noise during active work periods

Where possible, Watercare will work to minimise disruption and maintain access to properties and public spaces. Residents and stakeholders will be notified in advance of any works that may affect them.

Please note: these works will not affect household water or wastewater services.

Working with mana whenua

Watercare is working closely with mana whenua to ensure cultural values and tikanga are respected throughout planning and delivery of the project. This includes engagement on the timing of works and appropriate cultural processes ahead of construction.
