Helensville and Parakai Wastewater Servicing Project

Project overview

We’re planning how wastewater will be managed for Helensville and Parakai into the future. Current Auckland Council flood modelling and coastal inundation modelling indicates that the Helensville Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and parts of the wastewater network will be at risk due to sea level rise. We want to get ahead of this challenge, to ensure the Helensville and Parakai wastewater systems remain safe, reliable, sustainable for the future.

We are in the planning stage, which involves exploring a range of options for the future of wastewater servicing in Helensville and Parakai, with a particular focus on the Helensville WWTP. These options could include upgrading existing infrastructure or building a new WWTP on a new site. The preferred solution will be determined through assessing each option on technical and non-technical criteria. Public feedback is important to us through this process.

In early 2023, we engaged with the community to share the Helensville and Parakai Servicing Strategy, which opened the discussion regarding future wastewater servicing in the area and ensuring we can continue to provide safe, reliable, and sustainable wastewater services to support environmental outcomes and growth in the area now and for the next 30 years. We are evaluating longlist options for the WWTP and are now able to continue the conversation with the community to discuss future options that include:

• Reinforcing the existing WWTP at its current location

• Alternative WWTP locations in Helensville and/or Parakai

• Connecting the Helensville and Parakai wastewater network to the metropolitan network

What’s happening next:

We are continuing our conversation with the community by hosting a drop‑in session to share more information about the future of the wastewater plant, the long‑list options we are considering, why we need to plan ahead, and to hear directly from the community
