Judges Bay wastewater repair

Project overview

The unprecedented weather events of early 2023 caused an underground collapse under the Parnell Rose Gardens which in turn broke a wastewater transmission sewer line approximately 25 metres below the ground. Since this event occurred, we have had a temporary bypass in place.

Permanent repair

As the break occurred deep underground, we are unable to replace like for like without substantial disruption to the Rose Gardens. Therefore, we are installing a permanent solution that will include:

• A small pre-packaged submersible wastewater pump station on the North-Western corner of the Judges Bay Road Intersection with Bridgewater Road

• A rising main along Judges Bay Road to be installed by Horizontal Directional Drilling

• A gravity sewer along Cleveland Road to be installed by Horizontal Directional Drilling

Current and upcoming works

We are nearing the completion of the Judges Bay wastewater repair project and are pleased to share some updates. Commissioning of the pump station is scheduled for May 2025, with the goal of fully livening it by June 2025. Thank you for your continued patience and support as we complete this important project.

At Cleveland Road and Saint Georges Bay Road, we have experienced a delay due to unforeseen conditions requiring a slight design change. The design has now been finalised, and we are progressing with the completion of the manhole and pipe installation.

Major construction activities are nearing completion across all project sites. Key focus areas include final works on the pump station opposite 13 Judges Bay Road, completion of the manhole and pipe connections at Cleveland Road, and the satellite manhole installation at Bridgewater Road and Judges Bay Road. We are now moving into commissioning, testing, and reinstatement phases.

Judges Bay Road, Parnell

Traffic Management until June 2025:

• TMP will be set up 24/7 as outlined below.

• Reinstatement around the pump station is currently underway.

• Pump station commissioning is scheduled for May 2025.

• Target pump station livening is June 2025.

Cleveland Road, Parnell

Traffic Management until mid-late May:

• TMP will be set up 24/7 as outlined below.

• Road closure at the bottom of Cleveland Road will remain in place.

• Slight delay in the works due to unforeseen conditions which combined with other works in the area has meant we need to accommodate traffic management needs for the wider area.

• Final manhole and pipe connection to the existing transmission manhole are underway.

Traffic Management 17 May onwards

• Cleveland Road full road closure will be uplifted.

• TMP will switch to a 4-way Stop/Go system to accommodate the grouting and abandonment of the old sewer line.

• Permanent reinstatement will be completed by the end of May.

Important information

• We are committed to maintaining pedestrian access throughout all stages of work.

• Resident vehicle access will be prioritised wherever possible, although some restrictions may apply during specific stages.

• Emergency services will have full access at all times.
