Why this project matters

A large proportion of west Auckland’s drinking water currently relies on a single pump station and watermain supplied from the Waitākere Ranges. This configuration creates vulnerability within the network and limits when essential maintenance and upgrades can be undertaken without risk to supply.

The May Road Booster Pump Station establishes an additional supply route into the Titirangi reservoirs, enabling support from southern water sources when required. This provides greater flexibility, reduces network risk and improves the overall reliability of water supply as demand across Auckland continues to grow.

What this means for the community

Once in service, the May Road Booster Pump Station will improve the reliability and security of water supply for households, schools, businesses and essential services across West and South Auckland. It will reduce the likelihood of unplanned outages, enable planned maintenance to occur with less disruption and strengthen Auckland’s ability to respond to future growth and changing conditions.

What to expect during construction

Construction is currently expected to begin in April 2026 and will take approximately 12 months to complete. During this time, works will be visible from May Road and nearby residents may notice construction activity, vehicle movements and noise during standard working hours. At certain stages, works will take place within the road corridor, and traffic management will be in place when required. Screening and landscaping will be implemented once the main structure is complete to reduce visual and acoustic effects.

Below is an artists impression of what the finished pump station will look like. The pump station will also be surrounded by extensive planting to help it blend into the natural environment.

How we’ll keep you informed

Watercare will provide early and clear communication ahead of construction. On-site signage and local communications will explain what is happening and why, and project updates will be shared alongside the wider Western Water Supply Programme so communities can understand how this work fits into the broader resilience programme.

This project forms an important part of Auckland’s long-term water resilience programme, supporting a more flexible and reliable network for the future.
