Project Overview

Watercare is planning to renew sections of the wastewater network along Neilson Street and part of Alfred Street in Onehunga.

The project involves rehabilitating sections of ageing underground pipes and associated infrastructure that have been identified as being in poor condition.

To reduce disruption, we will undertake the renewals using predominantly trenchless technology, which allows pipes to be relined through existing manholes and minimises the need for excavation. Some localised excavation may still be required in certain areas.

As Neilson Street is a busy commercial and transport corridor, we plan for most of the renewal works to be carried out at night to help minimise impacts on businesses, freight movements and road users.

Benefits

Renewing the trade waste network will help:

  • Improve the condition and performance of ageing infrastructure.
  • Reduce the likelihood of wastewater network failures and unplanned repairs.
  • Extend the life of critical infrastructure.
  • Maintain reliable wastewater service for businesses and residents in the area.
  • Protect the environment by supporting the safe collection and transport of wastewater.
  • Support the ongoing operation and growth of the Onehunga community.

Investigation works

Before relining works can begin, we need to better understand the condition the wastewater network due for renewal.

Investigation works will include CCTV inspections and visual assessments that allow us to identify areas requiring renewal or repair. The information gathered will help confirm the scope of works and determine the most suitable renewal approach.

How will these works affect you?

You will see localised traffic management staged along Neilson Street and Alfred Street as we commence the CCTV investigations. We’ll let you know before anything happens; residents and businesses directly affected by the works will receive a notice in their letter box with more details. All wastewater and water services will remain operational and will not be impacted by this works.
