Project Overview

Following CCTV investigations completed earlier this year, Watercare is progressing to the next stage of the Ōrākei Wastewater Renewals project.

From July 2026, rehabilitation works will be carried out on sections of the wastewater network across Ōrākei (see map below for indicative work areas).

Most of this work will be completed using trenchless relining technology, which allows existing wastewater pipes to be renewed from within while minimising excavation and disruption to the surrounding community. Rehabilitation works will also be undertaken on selected manholes throughout the network.

While most works will take place within road corridors, berms, footpaths, and public reserves, some sections of the network require access through private properties. Where property access is needed, affected property owners will be contacted directly in advance to discuss the works and arrange access.

Through the investigation phase, some sections of the wastewater network were identified as requiring more extensive repairs. In these locations, traditional construction methods may be required to repair or replace existing assets. These works will only be undertaken where necessary.

Upcoming works: see map below

Work is scheduled to begin from the week of 20 July 2026, with crews moving through different areas of the Ōrākei wastewater network in stages.

If you live or work near an active work area, we'll keep you informed before works begin. Residents and businesses directly affected will receive advance notice with details about timing, access requirements, and any temporary impacts.

We understand construction can be disruptive at times and appreciate your patience while we complete these important upgrades to the wastewater network.

How the work will impact locals (traffic management plans, noise, roads blocked off etc):

To carry out these works, our contractors will need access to several sewer manholes. As the crew progresses, moving from manhole to manhole, you may experience some localised traffic disruption, noise, and odour in the immediate vicinity.

These works will generate some noise; however, it will be kept to a minimum and within levels approved by Auckland Council. We appreciate your patience as we undertake these essential works. Please note that these works will not affect your water or wastewater services.
