Project overview
The wastewater network in Ōtara has a number of challenges. Due to population growth and rapid development, the network is reaching capacity. During heavy rainfall it can overflow into the local environment, streams and the Tāmaki River.
To protect the environment, and support growth in your community, we are:
- building a new 400L/s pump station at 37-39 Hannah Road, Ōtara
- installing seven underground storage tanks at the existing Ōtara pump station in Billington Reserve
- relining a 2.5km section of an abandoned water pipeline to reuse it as a wastewater pipeline,
- and installing new pipelines that will connect the infrastructure together.
Project benefits
The southern catchment area is reaching capacity. By building a new pump station on Hannah Road, we will be able to pump the wastewater along the new and repurposed pipelines, to reach the new underground storage in Billington Reserve.
By reducing the pressure on the southern catchment area and increasing the wastewater network capacity, we’re protecting the environment by reducing overflows into the environment.

How will this work affect you?
Our contractor will set up their site laydown area at 25 Billington Road and 35 and 37 Hannah Road.
Our general working hours are typically 7am to 6pm Monday to Friday. On occasions, Saturday work may be required.
During working hours, construction noise, dust, vibrations and increased truck movement should be expected. Our teams will work to reduce the impacts as much as possible and will be kept within our consented limits.
We will complete this work using a combination of trenchless and open trenching construction methods. Wherever possible, we will use trenchless methodology to reduce the impacts to the community.
We do not expect this work to impact vehicle access to private properties. However, if required, our contractors will talk to directly impacted residents in advance.
During these works, an approved traffic management plan will be in place. You can expect changes such as:
- Contraflow or stop/go
- Road diversions
- Reduced speed limits
- Reduced lane width
- Reduced street parking
- Pedestrian detours / reduced footpath width
To keep everyone safe, we ask that you follow the traffic management signage and staff instructions.
We appreciate that this work is disruptive and want to thank you for your patience while we complete this essential mahi.
