Waiwera water and wastewater servicing project
We are upgrading the water and wastewater network to cater for growth.
Duration
Estimated 2025 - 2026
Location
Weranui Rd, Hibiscus Coast Highway and Twin Coast Discovery Highway
Status
Construction
Project overview
This $40 million project includes the construction of a new wastewater pump station at the existing Waiwera Wastewater Treatment Plant site, along with a new 4.6-kilometre wastewater pipeline that will connect to the existing Hatfields Beach Pump Station.
In addition to upgrading the wastewater infrastructure, a new watermain will also be installed to strengthen the local water supply network. This new watermain will be supplied by the existing Waiwera water reservoirs.
This project will provide additional capacity, ensuring that the wastewater network is able to keep up with population growth in Waiwera, Hatfields Beach and the surrounding suburbs. The new watermain will also enhance the resilience of the water supply, ensuring a secure and consistent service for the community.
Construction is expected to be completed by late 2026.

What is happening now?
From late November, we’ll start installing the first section of pipeline along the northbound lane of Twin Coast Discovery Highway in Waiwera. Both the new watermain and wastewater main will be laid in a single trench to reduce cost and disruption. This section will use open trenching.
At the same time, preparatory works will begin at the Waiwera Wastewater Treatment Plant for a new pump station. This includes overnight ecological surveys and some tree removal.
In early 2026, we’ll start horizontal directional drilling (HDD) for straighter sections of the route. HDD is less disruptive to the environment and community, reflecting our commitment to minimising impacts.
How will these works impact you?
- Typical work hours: will be between 7:30am and 6:00pm, Monday to Saturday. Any changes to this schedule will be communicated in advance.
- Worksites: a portion of Hatfield Beach Reserve will be occupied for the duration of the project; however, we will make every effort to minimise disruption to pedestrian access and pathways.
- Noise: Some noise is expected during the works, but it will be kept to a minimum and within levels approved by the Auckland Council Consents granted for the project.
- Driveway Access: We do not anticipate disruption of vehicle access to your property. However, if there is a need to restrict access, we will notify you in advance.
- Traffic impacts: Throughout the project the community will notice various temporary traffic and road layout changes along Twin Coast Discovery Highway, Weranui Road and surrounding streets in Waiwera and Hatfields Beach including:
- Stop/go systems in place
- Temporary traffic signal control
- Reduced lane widths
- Reduced speed limits
- Pedestrian detours/reduced footpath width
- Closure of Weranui Road. Residents access will be maintained at all times.
- We’ll keep the community informed with updates as these changes are implemented, so you can plan your journeys accordingly. We ask that you please follow the direction of traffic management staff and traffic signage to keep everyone safe.
