Trade waste agreements

Learn how trade waste agreements work and how to apply for one for your business.

What is a trade waste agreement?

If your business is not classified as low risk for trade waste, you will need to apply for a trade waste agreement.

This will set out the controls and monitoring you need to assure us your trade waste discharge is safe to enter our wastewater network.

How do I apply for a trade waste agreement?

Please complete an application form and send to us.

Preparing your management plan

As part of your application, you will also need to submit a management plan. This plan should identify:

  • potential risks to our wastewater system created by your site activities
  • how you will reduce these risks.

For full details, see Section 3 of the application form.

Here are two management plan examples you can refer to:

Our standard processing time is 20 working days, provided all required information is supplied.

How do I renew a trade waste agreement?

What if I have a one-off discharge?

If you have a one-off discharge, contact [email protected] to find out if a trade waste agreement will be required or a provisional consent for a short term discharge can be issued

Can I discharge stormwater, rainwater, surface runoff or groundwater?

Stormwater and groundwater discharges to the wastewater network are prohibited under Section 14 of the Auckland Council Water Supply and Wastewater Network Bylaw 2015.

We strictly control stormwater inflow from trade premises, due to increasing environmental pressures to reduce the number of wastewater overflows, finite network capacities, the cost of new infrastructure and our obligation to be a minimum cost service provider.

In some cases, contaminated water may be allowed under a trade waste agreement, with strict controls in place. Any approval of a stormwater discharge relates to the period of the agreement only and may not be approved into the future.
