The existing wastewater pump station and pipeline on Ireland Road has reached the end of its lifecycle. We’re replacing the ageing infrastructure to improve the wastewater network's resilience and to reduce wet weather overflows which will mean better outcomes for the local environment.
Work recently started and is expected to finish in April 2026.
What are we doing?
Our contractors, March Cato, are currently working in Ireland Road to install a new wastewater pipe. To keep everyone safe while we work, an approved traffic management plan (TMP) is in place along Ireland Road.
The current TMP with traffic lights will remain in place for approximately another month. From early October, the TMP will be scaled back and limited to the area around the chambers, located between 68 - 70 Ireland Road. This will involve a small lane closure, which is expected to remain in place until mid-November. Once these works are completed, all work on Ireland Road will be finished, and construction will continue in and around the pump station in the nearby reserve.
You will notice temporary changes such as:
• Stop/go systems
• Lane closure
• Reduced speed limits
• Pedestrian detours
• Reduced street parking.
We ask that you follow the directions of traffic management staff and signage.
A larger map can also be viewed on our project web page.

How will this affect you?
- Our general working hours are Monday - Saturday, 7:30am-6pm.
- The existing pump station is located next to the Panmure Basin public toilets on Ireland Road. The pump station upgrade works are expected to begin towards the end of the year. The site will be securely fenced for safety and an approved traffic management plan will be in place to maintain vehicle access to the car parks.
- Access to the Panmure Lagoon Sailing Club, the public toilets, the playground, the sheds and the boat ramp will not be impacted.
- Please note, your water and wastewater services will not be affected while we complete this essential mahi.

Watercare is building a new "booster" pumpstation at 119a May Road. It wants to increase the resiliency of the drinking water supply in the area.
Currently, approximately 55% of supply into the Western Water Supply Area is conveyed through the Huia 2 Watermain and New Lynn pumpstation. Relying heavily on single pump station and watermain presents a lack of resilience, and this project will address that issue. The new pumpstation will be able to deliver up to 90 mega litres of water per day to the Titirangi Reservoirs.
There are not expected to be significant community impacts from this project as:
• The impacts are expected to be largely confined to a single street and to directly adjacent properties.
• There is not expected to be widespread traffic management or impacts on business areas.
• All the land to be used will be owned by Watercare.
The project is currently progressing from design to tendering, and it is expected to begin construction in the new year.
For your information, an update on the next set of works as part of the Ōwairaka and Wesley water upgrades. The below map gives an overview of the overall project:

Works update – Denny Avenue
With the pipe work completed earlier this year on Denny Avenue, the team is required to come back to install a new manhole and lower the existing stormwater pipe. Once this is completed, the final section of watermain will be installed to tie into the works completed earlier this year.
Works in this section will start from 13 October and this work will take approximately three weeks to complete.

Expected Community Impacts
• Working hours are between 7am and 6pm Monday to Friday. Saturday work will only be utilised if required.
• Traffic management will be in place as follows: A section of Denny Avenue will be closed to through traffic.
• Our traffic management team will be onsite to assist neighbours navigating in and around the works area.
• Resident and driveway access within the road closure will be maintained at all times.
• Please leave your rubbish bins out on the kerb as per usual on your allocated rubbish day.
• Postal, delivery and transport serviced such as taxis and uber will be maintained. Please notify your driver to approach the traffic tam as they approach the closure for access.
• Construction works will create noise, vibration, and dust. We will endeavour to keep disruption to a minimum and will be working in accordance with the levels under the Auckland Unitary Plan.

Update on the project on the corner of May Road/Stoddard Road Mt Roskill.
- From the 26 September 2025 for approximately three weeks (weather dependent), Watercare will be carrying out connections works on the corner of May Road/Stoddard Road as shown on the area in the below map. The blue line shows the area of the actual connections, and the green/yellow shows the extent of our traffic management closure.
- In terms of traffic management setup, traffic will be maintained in both directions, and the car parking spaces in front of the shops will be available during these works.
- The team have confirmed that they will ensure that the signage saying, “business is open” and that “parking” signage is visible to the public.
- The team have visited to speak to the businesses and provide an update about these works. They will continue to update the shops.

Update on works near the underpass to Kukuwai Park (Hendon Avenue Reserve)
- Since mid-February 2025 our crew have been constructing a 610mm-diameter pipe adjacent to Richardson Road bridge which crosses over Oakley Creek.
- As you may be aware, the underpass to Kukuwai Park (Hendon Avenue Reserve) has been closed since February this year.
- We plan on opening the underpass this Thursday afternoon 21 August 2025, for the weekend.
- We will then close the underpass again on Monday 25 August 2025 at 7am until Tuesday 26 August 2025 to finish off our concrete piling works.
- Once these works are finished the underpass will be back open again until the final barrier install is completed which is estimated to start in early September and take approximately three working days to complete.
- We realise that this section of works has been disruptive to the local community, and we thank you for your patience while we have undertaking this mahi.
Remaining works on Richardson Road
- We still have a small section of watermain to complete from approximately the pipe bridge (near Kukuwai Park Hendon Avenue Reserve) to outside approximately 175 Richardson Road.
- Our crew are also currently working near the corner of La Veta Ave and Richardson Road. We estimate we will be finished these works by approximately mid-September.
- Please note, we will have finished our last section of works on Richardson Road by late 2025.
Update on our current works on Memorial Avenue, Mt Roskill
- From Monday 21 July 2025, construction of the watermain began on the section of Memorial Avenue between Mount Roskill Road and Dominion Road.
- These works are progressing well, and we estimate this section of work will be completed by late September.
- We will keep the community informed about our future section of works on Memorial Avenue, but we estimate we will have finished all sections on Memorial Avenue by late 2025.

For your information, an update on the next set of works as part of the Ōwairaka and Wesley water upgrades.

Please let me know if you would like any further information.

Watercare has upcoming works to renew existing aged sewer assets within the Waterview area. While most of these assets are located on private property, some are located within public reserves and parks. Therefore, our Operations Team will be applying to the Local Board for landowner approval. The extent of the works is outlined in the below map by the red lines:

The works are programmed get underway in December 2025 to be completed in May 2025.
Expected Community Impacts
• The renewal works are planned using mostly trenchless methods, to reline existing assets via existing wastewater manholes – this will keep wider community impacts to a minimum.
• Temporary access to certain park locations will be required and to safeguard any public in and around the park, work sites will be fenced off to deter public from entering. The worksites will be temporary and are expected to be short term from 1-2 weeks total.
• In locations where excavations are required, earthworks may be needed to repair the assets however all sites will be reinstated to the original condition.
• Signage boards and fencing/barriers will be erected around site to ensure pedestrians are aware of the hazards when walking nearby and are kept out of the work zones.
• Any works near trees will be barricaded off under the dripline so that no vehicles or works will occur beneath.

For your information, Watercare has a project to renew 800 metres of watermain along Market Road in Epsom/Remuera as part of our ongoing programme to update ageing assets and enhance the resilience of our water network.

The project involves relining the existing drinking water pipe. This method is less disruptive compared to others, such as open trenching, as it requires digging pits at each end of a pipe section and pulling the new lining through. Specifically, we will be installing three "launch pits" where the new lining will be fed in, and creating three to four receiving pits where the pipe will be pulled through.
The work will be executed in stages, moving along different sections from the launch to the receiving pits. This means not all pit sections will be open or operational simultaneously, minimising the overall disruption.
The project is scheduled to commence in the second half of 2026, with the most disruptive activities planned around school holidays and other low-impact periods to lessen inconvenience. We anticipate the project will take approximately four months to complete.
At present, our team is finalising the staging, methodology, detailed Traffic Impact Assessment, and necessary consents. We will keep you updated as the project progresses towards delivery.

For your information, Watercare is about to begin the targeted renewal of the wastewater pipeline from 48 Basset Road to 66 Middleton Road in Newmarket. This is an extension of the existing works underway to improve the wastewater network in the Newmarket area. It aims to improve the integrity of the wastewater pipes, reduce overflows, and enhance water quality.
The orange lines on the below map indicate the extent of the works:

From mid-October our contractor will need to access wastewater manholes in this area to inspect the pipeline using CCTV cameras. Following that the team are planning to reline the existing pipes and repair/replace manholes as required.
Expected Community Impacts
• Timeline: CCTV inspections typically take one to two days, while follow-up relining or repairs may take several days. Residents will be notified if their wastewater connection is temporarily blocked and when it is reinstated.
• Noise: Work will start at 7:00 am. Construction equipment, including air compressors, generators, and other diesel-powered items, will be onsite.
• Temporary wastewater disconnection: During relining, the wastewater line may be temporarily disconnected from the main sewer for the day. To prevent backups or overflows, the team will encourage residents to:
o Minimise flushing of toilets
o Avoid using dishwashers or washing machines
o Do not empty tubs, baths, basins, or sinks
o Switch off any automatic wastewater discharge pumps
• Access: Access to all manholes along the main sewer line will be required during both stages.
• Congestion: Contractors, vehicles, equipment, generators, and traffic management may be present on roadsides, berms, footpaths, and driveways. The team will work with residents to minimise disruption.
• Odour: Some temporary odours may occur during lining installation. This is normal and short-lived.

Watercare are about to renew the wastewater pipes on Cathedral Place in Parnell. Since these existing pipes are part of the combined wastewater/stormwater network, our intention is to separate the network as part of these works.
This means that the renewal work will be more disruptive than usual, as it involves more than just replacing or relining the pipes. It's likely that a new alignment will be required, making the project more complex. Although the new design is still being developed, our stakeholder team will soon reach out to local residents to inform them about the upcoming project and its potential disruptions in the next few months.
