Watermain Renewals
Kia ora,
From August 18, Watercare and our contractors will begin work to upgrade a section of watermain at 31 Noel Burnside Road, Wiri (see map below). These works are a part of Watercare’s Renewals Programme which replaces ageing watermains, reducing the risk of leaks and disruption to the water supply of Wiri.

How will these works affect you?
- These works are expected to take approximately three weeks to complete.
- Work hours will typically be from 7am to 5.30pm, Monday to Friday.
- While the work may generate some noise, please be assured that it will be kept to a minimum and within levels approved by Auckland Council.
- Toward the end of the project, we will need to undertake a water shutdown. We will notify affected parties five days in advance of the shutdown, and it will be planned at a time that will minimise disruption.
- You may also notice the following temporary changes along Noel Burnside Road and surrounding streets in Wiri:
- Reduced on-street parking
- Reduced land widths
- Reduced speed limits
- Pedestrian detours/reduced footpath width
- Traffic control in operation
Thank you in advance for your patience. We will ensure measures are in place to minimise any unnecessary disruption for the duration of this project.
Any questions?
If you have any questions or concerns about this project, please contact Hausia Lea on 027 241 8742 or email Watercare at [email protected]

As you may be aware, Watercare is planning to upgrade the wastewater network in your area. Once complete, our project will increase the networks capacity to support upcoming growth.
What is happening?
To help inform our design, and minimise construction issues, our contractors need to undertake investigations to understand the ground conditions. Conducting these investigations will ensure there is minimal disruption to the existing services and allow for timely and efficient construction.
These investigations will involve collecting soil samples up to 5m deep using a hand-operated auger within the road shoulder. Once complete, the sample locations will be reinstated with no permanent assets left behind.
Our first stage of ground investigations will take place in the road shoulder along: Stella Drive, Stevenson Road, Clarks Beach Road, Wharf Road and Boyd Road.
We will contact the community with more information about the second stage of ground investigations once the dates and locations are confirmed.

See the map above for the proposed locations – please note, these are subject to change depending on existing services locations.
How will these investigations affect you?
Works are expected to take place start in late September 2025 and take approximately one week to complete. If poor weather conditions occur, then works may be delayed to the following week.
Our general working hours are between Monday to Saturday, 7am-6pm.
Each investigation location will require traffic management to be in place. You may notice the following temporary changes:
- Reduced lane widths
- Reduced speed limits
- Pedestrian detours/reduced footpath width, and
- Reduced parking.

Work to remove the existing dam at our Glenbrook Beach Road site will begin in early September 2025. We are undertaking this work to restore the natural flow path of the water.
Our contractors, Lite Civil, are expected to be onsite for approximately three months.
During this time, you may notice an increase in vehicle movements in the area.
Our working hours are Monday to Saturday, 7am-6pm. During working hours, general construction noise is to be expected.
We do not expect these works to cause disruption to the wider community as all dam removal works will take place on Watercare land.
Once the works are complete, we will return to site during the planting season to install native plants near the dams former location.
Our project team is working hard to design the South-West Wastewater Upgrades. To help inform our design, and minimise construction issues, we need to undertake investigations to understand the ground conditions. Conducting these investigations will ensure there is minimal disruption to the existing services and allow for timely and efficient construction.
These geotechnical investigations are expected to take place in the road reserve along the proposed pipeline route. We will contact the wider community with more information once dates are confirmed and approved traffic management plans are in place.

Since April 2025, Watercare has been rehabilitating the Beachlands and Maraetai Wastewater Network to strengthen the integrity of wastewater pipes, reduce inflow and infiltration, and help protect local water quality.
This investment means the wastewater system will continue to operate safely and reliably for decades to come, with fewer maintenance requirements and reduced risk of overflows. Ultimately, this helps safeguard the environment and supports the growth of your community.
As part of the project, our crews have been relining pipelines and rehabilitating manholes in public reserves, roadways, berms, and some private properties. Since May, our crews have renewed 5.4km of pipelines across the network, with additional sections identified along the way that will also be completed before the project finishes.
What this means for you
- You may continue to notice our crews working in your area during the day.
- Some traffic management may still be in place for safety, though we’re doing our best to keep disruption to a minimum.
The project remains on track, and we expect renewal works to be completed by November 2025.

Watercare are building a new wastewater pump station and upgrading the existing pipe network to support Kāinga Ora housing development in Māngere East and support future growth in Buckland, Wickman and Favona. By upgrading the network, we’re increasing our networks capacity and improving water quality by reducing wet-weather overflows. We anticipate this project will finish in late 2027.
Click to see the fullsize map.
On Chelburn Crescent, new wastewater pipes will be installed using a pilot boring machine (PBM). The PBM tunnels underground by drilling through rock/soil and simultaneously laying the new pipe and removing the waste material. Using a PBM means there will be no open trenches along this section of road.
Our team will build five shafts on Chelburn Crescent, ranging from 3x3m to 5x5m in size. A photo showing a PBM shaft is shown below. The shaft is where the PBM will be installed and operated from for the next seven months. This is also where any excavated material will be collected from.
Steel sheet piles will be used to reinforce the shaft to keep our teams safe while working. The steel piles will be driven into the ground using an excavator with a vibrating hammer attachment.
Once the piles are installed, the team will dig down to 6 meters deep.
- Work on the shafts will begin on Monday 22 September 2025 and each shaft will take approximately three weeks to build. Once the shafts are built, the pilot boring work will begin and is expected to finish in February 2026. This work will be followed by the installation of the new manholes at each shaft location.
- Our general working hours are Monday to Friday, 7am-6pm. On occasion, Saturday work may be required. During working hours, construction noise, vibration, dust, increased truck movements and machinery is to be expected.
- As the shafts are located in the middle of the road corridor, a new closure will be in place on Chelburn Crescent until April 2026.
- Resident access will be maintained but some driveway access will be impacted. Our contractors will contact these properties directly with more information and will work with them directly.
- Pedestrian access will be maintained and staff will be onsite during work hours to assist if needed.
- Street parking will be restricted near the worksite to allow safe working space within the road for our machinery and truck deliveries. Please park your vehicles within your property or outside of the road closure area.
- There may be some traffic delays as we bring in machinery and have deliveries. We will notify affected residents of when to expect this.
- Please note, utility services such as gas deliveries, rubbish collection, couriers, taxi/uber will be permitted access into the road closure area by signalling the traffic controllers on duty. Please put your rubbish bins out as per normal, our team will move them to be collected if needed.
